The Leica PA19822 Standard C.1939 Leitz Elmar 3.5/5cm Rangefinder is a classic piece of photographic equipment that embodies the rich history and exceptional craftsmanship of Leica cameras. This particular model, produced around 1939, showcases the timeless design and superior optics that Leica has become renowned for.

The Leitz Elmar 3.5/5cm lens attached to this rangefinder is a versatile and high-performing lens. With a focal length of 5cm (approximately 25mm in 35mm format), this lens strikes a perfect balance between wide-angle coverage and moderate telephoto capability. The maximum aperture of f/3.5 allows for plenty of light to reach the film, making it an ideal choice for various shooting conditions.

The lens construction comprises six elements in four groups, ensuring excellent sharpness and contrast throughout the frame. The five-element design minimizes chromatic aberrations and distortion, resulting in images that are free from color fringing and geometric distortion. The lens also features a six-blade diaphragm, which produces a pleasing bokeh effect in the out-of-focus areas of the image.

The rangefinder itself boasts a sleek, compact design that is characteristic of Leica cameras. The precision-machined brass body exudes a sense of solidity and durability, while the leatherette covering adds a touch of elegance and comfort. The focusing mechanism is smooth and responsive, allowing for quick and accurate focus adjustments.

The built-in rangefinder system, coupled with the bright and clear viewfinder, enables accurate and intuitive focusing. The split-image rangefinder patch provides a clear and distinct split-image view when the focus is not on the subject, while the microprism collar offers a bright and clear view when focusing on the subject. The parallax correction scale on the lens barrel ensures accurate focusing at various shooting distances.

The Leica PA19822 Standard C.1939 Leitz Elmar 3.5/5cm Rangefinder is not just a tool for capturing images, but a testament to the art of photography and the rich heritage of Leica. It is an investment in both the past and the future, offering the opportunity to experience the joy and satisfaction of creating timeless, beautiful images with a truly iconic piece of equipment.
